Emergency shelter makes a significant impact in Cape Town CBD 🛏️
The Safe Sleeping Zone, a dedicated emergency overnight space for those experiencing homelessness, has had a “tremendous impact” on the homeless community in Cape Town's CBD since its launch in June 2026.
Situated under the Selkirk Street carriageway in District Six, next to The Haven Night Shelter, this temporary facility will remain operational until September 2026, providing safe and structured overnight accommodation for up to 60 individuals each night.
Access to the site is facilitated through a controlled referral and ticket-based system, with individuals referred directly by the CCID within its 1.74 km² area. The shelter opens nightly at 19h00, with the last entry at 21h30, and residents are required to leave by 06h30 the following morning.
As Gerardy-Bissolati states, "The Safe Sleeping Zone is far more than just a place to sleep; it fosters trust, restores dignity, and ignites hope. Assisting over 200 individuals into shelters in such a short period illustrates what can be achieved when compassion meets practical support and strong partnerships."
